Perpetual Revolution

Perpetual Revolution
By Martijn van Tilborgh

Take a look around.

Life has a stubborn habit of moving forward whether we like it or not.

And when things stay stable for too long, something inside us starts pushing for change.

That’s because progress is woven into the fabric of creation.

When the world does something new, God does something new.

And when God does something new, we must do something new.

What got us to where we are will not get us to where we’re going.

As leaders, this is something we cannot afford to ignore.

Every generation is meant to contribute to the unfolding story of God’s kingdom on earth. And that kingdom is always expanding.

Which means tomorrow will not look like today.

In other words, every generation is destined to disrupt the status quo created by the generation before it.

We are living inside what I call a Perpetual Revolution.

A movement driven by a kingdom that never stops advancing.

Great leaders recognize this. They lead with the future in mind.

They understand that rigidity cannot survive in a world that keeps moving forward.

When we accept that tomorrow will look different, we become flexible enough to embrace the change the future demands.

But this revolution is not just personal.

It is generational.

The way we lead today shapes the leaders who will follow tomorrow.

Take succession as an example.

The way we pass the baton determines not only how our successor leads, but how the generations after them will lead.

Leadership echoes forward.

That is why we must resist the temptation to define the future based solely on what worked in our lifetime.

The next generation will lead differently.

And they should.

If we cling too tightly to our customs and systems, we may unintentionally suffocate the very future we claim to care about.

Our goal cannot simply be to preserve what we built.

The future does not need a perfect replica of the past.

What the future needs is space to become something new.

So here is the real challenge for leaders.

Create space.

Make room.

Let the revolution breathe.
